The Education Plus Development reported that, Corona-virus pandemic has affected more than 70 percent of students around the world due to nationwide school closures—or more than 1.26 billion children and youth. Bearing the government have clearly stated that the earliest the school can resume is September. As a parent, the question is how to home-school effectively at home? To home-school effectively follow this six ways:
1. Create a timetable: Just like in schools its important to set a schedule for learning, meals, playing, chores and other daily activities. It is important to involve the kids in planning the schedule. Despite having a timetable, let the students have freedom to decide which subject they can study.
2. Assist your children to have a learning environment: Each child learn differently and may perform in a different way depending on environment. Judy Wanjiku, a teacher at Ecole Du Saint Espirit says,"Help them create a conducive environment for different subject. For instance, Environmental may be taken outside in the compound. Hygiene in Bathroom like washing handkerchief. Some subjects may be taught from kitchen, dinning table,on their bed etc."
3. Consult the kids teachers: It's important to contact the children teachers to know exactly what is expected of them in terms of assignment and coverage in syllabus. Determine the appropriate resources that will help them. Like a teacher know how to motivate them, no danger in bribing them sometimes. Incentives like time with electronics or playtime once schoolwork is complete, and suggests making expectations clear to kids so there's no confusion about what they need to get finished to earn their reward. This may assist them.
5. Make it enjoyable: Make learning for your kids to be fan. For instance, create a song to count. Teach in a gentle and caring way. Involve activities, incorporate art work and make it more practical. Television and other technology platform can be effective. In Kenya for instance, have EDU-TV channel that has programmes dedicated for kids.
6. Prepare yourself: Do your homework before teaching.Schedule out lessons and read their textbooks before they do. Be a good leader and therefore do research. Your kids should believe in you. Any sign of not understanding content may create distrust bearing in mind they are used to professional teachers. As Terri Peters noted,"Your 'school day' will not be perfect, and that's OK. Just try to remember you're adjusting to something new and there will be some bumps along the way." Remember you are taking something that you are not used to.
